One of the steps that need to be taken first if you wants to get an earring is to get your ears pierced. In most cases these days, people go to piercing shops – in the past, friends or family friends often did this minor surgical procedure.

There is always a risk of a bacterial infection with piercing. The key is to go to a reputable shop where the piercer should wash his hands and wear new gloves. Your ear should also have been cleaned with some disinfecting liquid. The piercing usually happens with a specially designed gun. Once pierced,an earring will be placed in the hole straight away. You should keep it in for four to six weeks or until the wound heals up completely. You should keep it clean and preferably rub alcohol on the wound to prevent infections.

After the piercing has healed, you can take the earring out and clean both the piercing and the earring. It is advised that you take out your ear jewellery before you go to bed. At this stage, it’s unlikely that your new holes will heal when you take out your earring.
