does my wedding ring have to be a diamond?

i would hate to wear those matching bands..

my mum says that a wedding ring should be a diamond ring.
i wanted a sapphire and diamond ring…
but my mum says that would be more appropriate as an engagement ring but not as my wedding ring. ??? does it really matter that much, i know it doesn’t.
