There is more to gems than just brilliance in gorgeous crowns and jewelry.  From the oldest known civilizations, specific precious stones have long been known to have metaphysical energies.  They had an abundance of uses in traditional medicine and sacramental and ritualistic ceremonies.   It was only thousands of years later that gemstones were valued for their magnificence and usefulness in adornment such as jewelry.  In some cultures, gems had been linked to astrology and the nine planets.  

Many argued that there was no connection between gems and planets and that it was all superstition and religious falsities, but others have pointed out that there is scientific evidence behind planetary gemology research.   This research has  indicated that the cosmic color spectrums given off by the diverse planets, are very related to the corresponding gem’s own color spectrums.  They further argue that through these gems, the body can absorb the cosmic strength of that planet.  The gem becomes a filter producing good or evil effects depending on the individual’s needs.

It is commonly accepted that crystals used in car radio technology are fundamental in transmitting, getting and transforming unseen energy into sound.   The crystalline structure of gems are also believed to attract and condense the planetary energies that bombard our planet and that these gems can change this energy for us if we locate them next to our bodies.      Vedic astrology for instance, associates the 9 key gem stones with the nine planets.  This is the oldest astrology known, thought to be over 7000 years old.  They thought that there was a connection between heavenly entities in our solar system and the human body, and that the placements of these planets relative to each other similarly had an affect on us such as the lunar stages are responsible for the tides in our seas.  Their astrology studies indicated that each planet has its own cosmic color and energy and that they broadcast these coloured rays through space with their energy-giving properties of electricity, magnetism and heat.  It would logically be absorbed by every living animal on earth.    

The Vedic beliefs expound that the characteristics of good stones must be an innermost luster, brilliance with rays, transparency, absense of impurities, good configuration of shape and brilliance.  If the gem is unable meet these criteria, it is ignored.   Good gems ensure good luck, affluence and success.  A poor quality gemstone brings misfortune and disaster as well as other unwanted evils.   Gems today are graded uniquely to decide value, but again color, translucency and durability of the stones are some of the preferred qualities, as they were many centuries ago.

The nine astrological gems linked to planets are as follows: Ruby is associated with the solar rays, the Pearl with the Moon, Red Coral with the planet Mars, the Emerald and Mercury, Yellow Sapphire with Jupiter, the Diamond with Venus, Blue Sapphire with Saturn, and representing the two lunar nodes is Hessonite Garnet. A more contemporary addition is Tanzanite which is understood to boost Saturn’s energies.

Over the centuries, additional gems were included to signify the 12 signs of the zodiac and this in due course resilted in recognition of birthstones which have a variety of elucidations following modern, traditional or Ayurvedic which is the old Indian philosophy based on Vedic astrology.
